ExCAL were retained by NPTCBC to undertake
a comprehensive study for a 200 acre development site near Port
Talbot in South Wales. The site was formerly occupied by a steelworks,
a galvanising facility and other potentially contaminative uses.
Within the study we carried out the following tasks:
- Desk Study
This phase of the study included a rigorous investigation of the
history of the site and was designed to identify potential development
constraints.
- Site Investigation
The site investigation comprised excavation of over
600 trial pits and 50 boreholes. Soil and groundwater samples
were collected using strict quality assurance procedures and were
analysed for chemical contamination.
- Quantified Risk Assessment
A quantified risk assessment was undertaken to evaluate
the risks posed to flora, fauna and the aquatic environment. The
risk assessment allowed design of pragmatic and cost effective
remediation strategies.

- Environmental Impact Assessment
ExCAL completed a comprehensive EIA for
the land reclamation scheme. As part of the assessment we carried
out a full ecological survey and archaeological study.
- Environmental Supervision of Reclamation Scheme
We were retained to provide ongoing support to the reclamation
team during the works. Specialist advice included translocation
of rare plant species and archaeological supervision.
